Zach stories

These just happened today and well, I had to post at least one of them because I didn't want to forget it and the other one I figured I would write because I was already sitting at the computer.

As I was looking over Zachary's school work I decided I would discuss his mistakes with him and question why he didn't follow directions. While looking at his insect that they were supposed to draw correctly with only 6 legs I ask him why he drew 10 legs on his. He tells me it was because he wanted it to be a spider ant. I told him, "Well, you were supposed to make it an insect and only draw 6 legs on him. Next year you are going to be getting a grade on your paper so you need to follow the instructions. And if you get a bad grade, you won't go to college, and if you don't go to college you can't be an astronaut." His response, "I'll just be a daddy all day then."

I of course was trying to make an impact on the fact that grades are important and we do discuss college and how he is going to study aeronautics so that he can be an astronaut, but I guess it's not that important to him!

I did tell him that generally that daddies go to work and it's the mommies that stay home so he'll probably have to go to work. Sorry bud!

Also, he was looking for something in his room and it's really dark outside right now because of a storm that's coming so I knew he couldn't see in his room very well. I asked him if he could reach the light switch to turn on the light. (Generally it wouldn't matter because we leave the fan on and pull the light switch off at night, but since it's been dark all day I remember having pulled his light on before turning the switch off.) Anyways, he tells me know he can't. Since I'm feeding Brandon I ask him if he could reach it if he stood on one of his buckets. He tells me, "No, I might slip off and fall." Now I think you choose this time to be obedient and cautious even when I'm suggesting it?!? No worries I ran upstairs real quick to flip the switch!

Hopefully I post about more exciting things in our life real soon. I just wanted to remember that first story for myself!

As I was reading this I felt I could empathize with Zach. I would almost NOT want to draw 6 legs just b/c they asked me to. I guess I'm just I'm a rebel :) I'm glad he's planning on being a daddy. I'm sure he'll be a good student too thanks to his mommy's efforts to go over assignments with him.

Ha ha! I love the train of thought about # legs=grade=college=astronaut. It reminds of what I do with Ezra sometimes: I like to call it reverse manipulation. I give him two choices, hoping that he'll choose the one I want. Sometimes, however, he sees right through it and my scheme doesn't work. For instance, if he's dragging his feet in the store, I tell him that he can either walk like a big boy or I can drag him. So guess what he chooses? "Drag me!" Argh!
